CHANDIGARH, July 13: Petrol and diesel supplies in the Union Territory are likely to become normal from tomorrow, following the decision of the Chandigarh Petroleum Dealers Association to resume making fresh indents for supplies from July 14.

The decision followed assurances by officials of the Chandigarh Administration for examining the issue of imposition of sales tax on diesel. A delegation of the Association had earlier met the UT Administrator Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd) and sought the rolling back of sales tax imposed on petrol and diesel.

Association president Arjun Singh said the Administrator marked their representation to the UT Finance Secretary, who has assured them of reviewing the sales tax on diesel after assessing the effect of ST on sales of petrol.

The Association has also apprised the public that besides sales tax of 5.5 per cent on petrol and diesel imposed now, the motor spirit tax on petrol (15 paise per litre) and diesel (10 paise per litre) would remain in force.

Meanwhile, the decision of petroleum dealers not to make fresh indents had its effect on the public as long queues were witnessed at various petrol pumps where the supplies had not yet exhausted. As many as 10 petrol pumps in the City had already gone dry by the evening and five more were likely to go dry by tomorrow morning. However, supplies are likely to be normal by the afternoon with fresh arrivals.
