NEW DELHI, Feb 7: Anil Kumble made history today by becoming only the second bowler in 123 years of Test cricket to take all the 10 wickets in an innings while destroying Pakistan at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here to enable India to win the Second Test and level the series.

In turning out the greatest-ever bowling performance by an Indian, Kumble was almost unplayable on the fourth day of the Test when Pakistan, chasing a stiff victory target of 420 runs, were bundled out for 207, leaving the hosts victorious by 212 runs, a huge margin after the narrow 12-run defeat at Chennai last week.

The Karnataka leggie took 10 for 74 to become only the second bowler after England off-spinner Jim Laker had performed the feat of taking 10 wickets for 53 runs against Australia at Old Trafford 43 years ago.

The 28-year-old fastest leg spinner tore apart the Pakistan batting in a dream wicket-taking spell of 17.5-9-37-10 to send the visitors, nicely perched at 101 for no loss soon after lunch on the fourth day, crashing to 207 all out in 46 minutes after tea in front of a full house roaring its support.

Earlier in the day, India, 324 for seven overnight, set Pakistan an almost impossible target of 420, being all out for 339 in their second knock in the fifth over of the day.

Kumble, who had a match haul of 14 for 149, is still far behind Laker who holds the world record of 19 wickets set in the very same Old Trafford test. The leg spinner, who easily surpassed his previous best for both an innings (7/59) and match (11/128) achieved against Sri Lanka in the 1993-94 Lucknow Test, was mobbed by his team mates and later chaired to the dressing room with the crowds delirious with joy. Kumble’s amazing feat stood out as much as India’s brilliant victory to atone for their loss in Chennai. He eclipsed Kapil Dev’s record of 9/83 claimed against West Indies in the Third Test at Ahmedabad in 1983 and Jassu Patel’s effort of 9/60 against Australia at Kanpur in the Second Test in the 1959 home series.

There was no inklingof such a turn around till Kumble — the obvious choice for Man of the Match and ended the series with 21 wickets which was one more than Man of the Series Saqlain Mushtaq who claimed 20 wickets in the four innings with 10-wicket efforts in both Test — struck soon after lunch.
