NEW DELHI, September 6: It is at the lowest level (schools) that one can improve and improvise one’s skill or inculcate competitiveness among players. Cricketing sense must be taught at the very beginning. It is necessary to have proper foundation before one aims to achieve anything big,” said national selector Madan Lal while announcing the conduct of the second Pepsi Youth Cricket Series in the Capital from tomorrow. Delhi is the first venue of this six-city tournament.
“That is the main reason the second edition of the Pepsi Youth Cup is being played for under-16 boys while last year it was boys in the under-19 age group,” Madan Lal said.
“This year’s series will be played in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Calcutta. The tournament will be played on a knock-out basis wherein a 14-member team will be selected after the intra-city final from each city. Then the tournament will culminate with an inter-city cricket tournament," Madan Lal said.
“Former Test players Shivlal Yadav, Roger Binny, K Srikkanth and Saba Karim will supervise the series,” Deepak Jolly, vice president, Corporate Communications of Pepsi Foods Ltd, said here today.
The 16 participating teams in the Delhi tournament will be: Govt Boys Sr Sec School (Vikaspuri), Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Delhi Public School (RK Puram), Salwan Public School (Rajender Nagar), St Columba’s School, Mount St Mary’s (Delhi Cantt), Modern School (Vasant Vihar), Hans Raj Model School (Punjabi Bagh), Modern School (Barakhamba Road), Cambridege Foundation Sr Sec School (Rajouri Garden), Bal Bharati Public School (Rajender Nagar), Gyan Bharati School (Saket), DAV Model School (Shalimar Bagh), Manav Sthali School (New Rajinder Nagar), Bal Bharati Public School (Pitampura), Salwan Boys Sr Sec School (Rajinder Nagar).
The matches will be played at Mount St Mary’s and Gyan Bharati school grounds. The final, slated for September 15, will be played at Gyan Bharati School. Two matches are scheduled for the opening day. Govt Boys Sr Sec School (Vikaspuri) take on Sardar Patel Vidyalaya at Mount ST Mary’s School ground while Modern (Barakhamba Road) play Cambridge Foundation at Gyan Bharati ground. Salwan Public School won the championship for the city last year.
