An Indian peacekeeper was killed today by a stray bullet during a shootout between Congolese troops and unidentified gunmen in the country’s volatile east, UN officials said.
Three Indian soldiers also were wounded in the incident in Sake, a village 30 km from the main city of Goma on the border with Rwanda, said Col. Thierry Provendier, a peacekeeping spokesman.
Congolese soldiers were chasing a vehicle containing armed gunmen, and both sides began firing at each other, said spokesman Kamal Saiki for the UN Mission in Congo.
The peacekeepers were in the area by coincidence, traveling behind the Army vehicle at the time the shootout began, Saiki said.
The slain Indian soldier ‘‘was hit by a stray bullet that came from the civilian vehicle,’’ Saiki said. —PTI
