Pune, January 9: Maharashtra pugilists were found at the receiving end as hopeful Girish Pawar and Navin Surwade bowed out in the light flyweight categories of the 47th senior National boxing championships at Pimpri, near here on Tuesday.

Pawar lost on points (17-20) to Bhim Singh of Assam Rifles while Navin bowed out with a fourth round RSC to Torakha Pram of Meghalaya.

Meanwhile Services boxers continued their march into the next round posting easy wins over their opponents. Rosema Colney, Bhola Murmu and Safdar Khan of the Services posted wins to make it to the last stage in the light flyweight category.

Likewise, Bipin Pyngrope, the title holder in the bantamweight, who replaced injured Dingko Singh, brought his rival R Kannan off Tamil Nadu down to earth in the third round with a referee stopped contest (RSC) verdict.

Statehood protest takes violent turn in Ladakh, BJP office set ablaze in Leh

Protests in Ladakh turned violent as students and youth organisations demanded statehood and Sixth Schedule status. Two elderly protesters fainted, prompting a shutdown call. A BJP office and security vehicle were set on fire. Activist Sonam Wangchuk urged for a peaceful approach. The demand for Sixth Schedule status is due to Ladakh's tribal-majority population and direct central administration.
