BEED, February 16: In a tit for tat policy, Congress leader Sharad Pawar who had long been riled by Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde, today hit back, accusing Munde’s family of terrorising people in their home district Beed.

Campaigning for the Congress candidate here, Ashok Patil, Pawar said: "In recent days the district has come to be synonymous with rape, molestation, extortion and terror." He went the whole hog blasting Munde and the coalition Government.

"Parli has become another name for goondagiri. About 200 girls seek their education in the neighbouring town of Ambe Jogai. They have had to call off their studies because of the constant fear of rape and molestation," he said.

"Four girls have already committed suicide. Now the situation is such that the police cannot even register FIRs on their own," he said.

Ridiculing Munde for his moral high ground, Pawar said, "In a situation where even traders are harassed and citizens are leaving Parli in droves with their families to escapesuch unprecedented terrorism, the man who had led a Sangharsh Yatra for a cleanup of the political system while he was leader of the Opposition, now needed to effect a clean-up of his own home."

"How do people like Munde and his party, hope to govern the country, when they cannot even run their own city council and the State Home Department?" Pawar asked.

This was the first direct attack by Pawar on the Deputy Chief Minister who had revelled in riling Pawar when he (Munde) was leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Pawar, however, took care to point out that his criticism of Munde was "political and not personal".
