The Patna High Court today quashed an arrest warrant against RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, issued by the Siwan District Magistrate under the Bihar Crime Control Act. A division bench comprising Justices Nagendra Rai and Barin Ghosh quashed the warrant issued on June 22 after the MP did not appear in the DM’s court despite a summons to show cause as to why the CCA should not be evoked against him.

But three non-bailable arrest warrants in three other cases were still pending against the Siwan MP. The state police continue to shy away from executing them, though for the second time today, Director General of Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha said that the warrants would be executed soon.

Despite the warrants, Shahabuddin continues to travel in the state and hold public meetings. He had even called on the Election Commission in Delhi as part of an RJD delegation. Yesterday, he left for Delhi from Patna and the state police chose to look the other way.

‘‘I don’t know if there are arrest warrants against me,’’ he told reporters.

The DGP said that three non-bailable arrest warrants — relating to recovery of illegal firearms, ammunition, unaccounted foreign currency, power theft and violation of the Wildlife Act — were pending against the MP.

Yesterday, Bihar Chief Secretary G.S. Kang too had asserted that the warrants against Shahabuddin would be executed in the next couple of days.
