Gujarat vs Delhi was not just another Ranji match. It had the heavy responsibility of restoring reputations that had taken a knock in the recent past. Aakash Chopra, Ashish Nehra, Gautam Gambhir all had a point to prove.

None more so, however, than Parthiv Patel, the focus of all ire during the recent series against Australia. Playing his debut match in this tournament, Parthiv put in an efficient performance with one or two stellar moments.

His record at the end of the match: three catches, one stumping and a run out and scores of 27 and 33. Even his collections were clean and he fumbled less than earlier.

Parthiv’s batting prowess was never in doubt; indeed, he’d proved that on his Test debut when he saved the day for India against England at Trent Bridge. However his critics said the batting camouflaged his keeping errors.

“He was getting the basics wrong’’, said Aunshuman Gaekwad, Gujarat’s consultant coach and former India opener. ‘‘That resulted in all the fumbles and poor collections. But I am working on those aspects and it seems he is learning. He had a good outing here and if he keeps working on his basics he might be back in the Indian team again soon.’’

Even the stumper himself agreed that he did not do anything out of the ordinary here but just tried to concentrate on the basics. ‘‘I was happy with my performance here but I still have to work on my basics for a while’’.
