PARLI-VAIJNATH, SEPT 5: Gripped by high tension following overnight incidents of violence, counter attacks and helped by a police force which refused to entertain the minutest complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Parli-Vaijnath, Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde’s constituency went to polls on Sunday, even as Munde, kept `patrolling’ nearby areas himself to ensure nothing goes against him.

Strong rumours kept floating all over the constituency throughout the day that the Deputy Chief Minister had tried to provoke violence and postpone the polls fearing the tide was against him.

However, at the end of the day almost 60 per cent of the voters cast their votes in the constituency. Early on Sunday, suspected BJP activists barged into the office of the local cable TV owner Satish Biyani and ransacked his office for focussing on two of Munde’s rivals, Pandit Anna Daund of the Congress and T P Munde of the Sharad Pawar’s National Congress Party (NCP).

Late on Saturday night Munde’s brother,Pandit Anna Munde, sustained injuries on his arms when he was allegedly attacked by a mob of over 50 people belonging to T P Munde’s group. The NCP candidate however has alleged that Pandit Anna had been campaigning well after the deadline time and had been wooing voters by disbursing money.

T P Munde also claimed that he had caught red-handed, Ashok Samant, a close aide of Gopinath Munde, issuing instruction to the employees of the Parli-Vaijnath Municipal Council to vote in favour of the BJP.

But while the police have refused to lodge either T P Munde or Satish Biyani’s complaint, they seemed more than eager to take note of Ashok Samant’s complaint against T P Munde.

Samant has alleged that T P Munde has threatened to shoot him dead. Interestingly, while Samant moves along with an armed policeman as his security T P Munde does not even posses a revolver’s licence.

T P Munde, meanwhile, had made an elaborate plan to keep a vigil on Gopinath Munde’s `key’ men, out on their `drive’ to disburse moneywithin the last 24 hours.

His workers succeeded in trapping at least three men, all of whom were beaten up mercilessly. While Ashok Samant and Harishchandra Wange were `caught’ in Saturday morning. Munde’s brother Pandit Anna who is also the municipal chief, `encountered’ late last night.
