SURAT, May 3: A 50-member delegation of the Vishakapatnam Municipal Corporation, who landed in the city on Saturday, will conduct a study of the facilities being provided by the Surat Municipal Corporation. The delegation visited a number of the civic body’s projects including the indoor stadium, the flyover bridge, the wier-cum-causeway, the Katargam water works, the Bhatar disposal plant among others.
At a meeting held on Saturday evening with the delegation, civic officials announced that planned efforts were now being made to make Surat a `green city’ and the SMC would provide water to 85 per cent of the city’s population by the year 2000. The SMC has also helped sort out the traffic problem of the city by building flyovers at two places in the past two years, civic officials said.
Led by chairman of the standing committee of the Vishakapatnam civic body, S S N Patanaik, the delegation — comprising councillors, engineers, health officials and administrators — also held a meeting with leaders of the SMC to discuss how the city had achieved success in civic work, especially cleanliness.
While stating that the civic body intended to make the city the cleanest in the country, civic officials including Deputy Mayor Kishore Lakhani and Standing Committee Chairman Natu Patel said they were proud to have achieved the second cleanest city distinction, even though the city was surrounded by industrial units and a sizable portion of the city’s population comprised those migrating here for better employment opportunities.
The visiting delegation leader said that Vishakapatnam was the second fastest growing city in Asia and efforts were being made by the civic body to provide better services to the citizens in Vishakapatnam. The visiting delegation will meet officials of various departments individually before winding up their tour of the city.
