Panel to decide quota criteria

At a time when BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is promising quota for economically backward classes among upper castes, the Centre on Monday informed that it had appointed a commission to chart out criteria for economically backward classes, which are not covered under existing reservation policies. Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said this in the Rajya Sabha through a written reply to a question on Monday. She said the commission had been entrusted with

the responsibility of eliciting the views of state Governments and Union Territories on the subject.
