The Standing Committee on External Affairs has expressed concern over non-allocation of work for the Ministry of Non-Resident Indians Affairs since its creation three months back.

In its report, the committee wanted to know the status of this new Ministry and its jurisdiction and suggested the basic infrastructure required should be provided at the earliest. The committee also felt that budgetary allocation of this ministry should be augmented .

The committee was told a group of ministers, looking into the issue, were considering allocation of various subjects to this ministry such as admission of NRI/PIO students in Indian institutes, scholarships and general policy on employment assistance. The committee was told that the powers in respect of certain subjects such as single-window clearance for matters relating to PIO card scheme and dual citizenship could be exercised by the NRI Affairs Ministry in consultation with ministries of External Affairs, Home, Finance, Commerce, Labour and Employment.
