Pakistan has urged strong US support for President Pervez Musharraf’s fight against Al Qaeda terrorists and also at a time when the country was ‘‘reaching out to India with conciliatory gestures’’.

‘‘US should stand by Musharraf in this hour of trial and not desert him as he remains the best bet for enlightened moderation in Pakistan,’’ Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Ahsraf Jehangir Qazi said in a letter to the Washington Post.

Replying to a Post editorial urging Musharraf to ‘‘deliver on his promises’’, Qazi wrote ‘‘under Musharraf, more than 500 suspected Al Qaeda terrorists have been taken down, remnants of the Taliban are being squeezed and ‘conciliatory gestures to India,’ to quote the Post, have been made’’.

‘‘Pakistan is reaching out to India with an offer of dialogue and a peace process that includes a settlement for the Kashmir issue. What more does the Post expect?’’ Qazi asked.
