Hundreds of patients and their attendants in the Government District Hospital here had a narrow escape today after a Pakistani mortar shell fired from across the Line of Control (LoC) exploded in its premises.

Another shell exploded five minutes later near the hospital, damaging a house badly. The hospital is in the heart of Poonch town, three km from the LoC. In retaliatory action, over a dozen Pakistani soldiers were killed and many injured. The Pakistani post of Bodhian, opposite Poonch town, was damaged, official sources said, adding ambulances were seen carrying the dead and the injured across the border.
