JAMMU, Jan 2: Pakistan has set up new training camps for foreign mercenaries who can later be pushed across the border and has shifted its concentrated attention from Kashmir valley to Jammu, Poonch and Rajouri areas, a senior army officer has said.
Army had definite information that seeing that local militancy was waning, Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was now relying on foreign mercenaries alone and was establishing new training camps for them, Maj Gen Bupinder Singh, General Officer of a Division in Jammu, told reporters here yesterday. Speaking after a function where seven hardcore militants surrendered, Gen Singh said the situation in jammu region was well under control, but did not rule out the possibility of Pakistani agents targeting some soft targets.
He said the youth, who were misguided by ISI, had realised that the gun culture would not help them as they were doing a futile exercise by putting their lives at stake.
The surrender of seven militants, who also handed over a largequantity of arms and ammunition, came within 24 hours of the surrender of 12 top militants before Delta Force commander Maj Gen C S Brar at Doda.
