PURI, January 14: Hosts Orissa won the East Zone Ranji title when they trounced Tripura by an innings and 182 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day match at SCS College Ground on Friday.

The visitors, who were forced to follow after their first innings folded up at 172 in reply to Orissa’s 545 for 8 declared, were bundled out again for a paltry 191.

With the eight points, Orissa took their final points tally to 23, having earned 15 from their three drawn matches against Bihar, Bengal and Assam. Bengal follow with 21 points from four outings.

Resuming at 168 for nine, Tripura lasted just three minutes. In their second knock, barring Anand Pratap (58), none of the Tripura batsmen put up any resistance. Spinner Jagannath Das claimed five wickets conceding 31 runs.

BIHAR HAVE THE EDGE: A solid 84 by Rajiv Kumar and half centuries by Amir Hashmi and MS Dhoni helped Bihar post 327 for nine in their second innings on the penultimate day of the East Zone league match at Jamshedpur on Friday.Bihar thus established a 338-run overall lead.
