Two more persons have reportedly died after being detained in the Army’s drive against crime and violence in Bangladesh as the main Opposition called for a general strike tomorrow to protest harassment of its members during the five-day crackdown.
Though the Army maintained that one of them died of heart failure and other due to injuries inflicted during the time of arrest, the relatives of the victims alleged that they died during interrogation.
Three local leaders of ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party had died earlier during interrogation bringing the total number of deaths during the crackdown to five.
Meanwhile, the main Opposition, Awami League (AL), called for a strike tomorrow against harassment of its workers during the crackdown. The dawn-to-noon shutdown will only be enforced in Dhaka.
The AL alleged that the drive is intended to crush Opposition after two prominent leaders of the party were arrested in Dhaka and the houses of several former ministers and top leaders raided and searched. The Army also sealed an office of AL and seized documents, former PM and Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina said. Hasina charged that the Army was being used for an “unconstitutional, undemocratic act’’.
