Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly taken strong exception to a veiled attack mounted on him by Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel at a condolence meeting for slain BJP leader Haren Pandya.

At Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting here, Modi is learnt to have expressed displeasure at remarks made by the two leaders though he did not name them. It would have been far better, he is learnt to have said, if party leaders had eulogised Pandya and announced the setting up of a welfare scheme in his memory.

The Chief Minister reportedly told his ministers that although certain remarks were made against him, he kept quiet, maintaining the solemnity and dignity of the condolence meeting as a disciplined soldier of the party.

Modi reportedly told the ministers that just as a memorial had been built for Geetaben Rambhia — a campaigner against cow slaughter who was murdered some years ago — one could be built for such a popular leader as Pandya.

He is also learnt to have directed his ministers to regularly meet party legislators from the districts they have been given charge of. They were also told to rein in MLAs and keep them from airing their views in public on controversial issues such as paucity of funds hampering development work.
