VADODARA, Nov 30: In a bid to create awareness about the hazards of using plastic bags, the authorities of Tejas Vidyalaya distributed cloth bags to the winners of the pre-primary sports competition held in the school on Saturday.

“First the parents have to be convinced about the need to ban plastic bags. Only then can the students be taught about it,” said school administrator Revathi Shanker.

According to Shanker, the school authorities had also covered the subject in the classroom. Besides the media, schoolteachers had a large role to play in a campaign like this, she added.

“We have taken the first step to making students stop using plastic bags to bring their lunch or other things by awarding cloth bags”, Shanker said. “Though the awareness angle could be covered by demonstrations and charts, the prize will actually encourage students to use cloth bags”.
