No women candidates in 24 Delhi Assembly seats

Despite women’s empowerment being a much talked about issue, 24 Assembly constituencies in the poll-bound national capital do not have any candidate of the fairer sex.

This time, the number of women contestants has also shown a decrease of 18 from 2003 Assembly polls when 78 women were in the fray.

One of the constituencies from where no woman is contesting is Vikaspuri in west Delhi. Woman leaders of both the Congress and the BJP had lobbied for nominations.

Youth Congress leader Alka Lamba and Ragini Naik and BJP’s Vani Tripati had tried to get their respective parties’ nod, but finally the seat went to male candidates in both parties.

Winnability was the criteria and accordingly we decided on who will be the candidate, senior leaders of both Congress and BJP said.

Both West and South West districts have five constituencies which have no women candidates. In West, besides Vikaspuri, there are no women candidates in Nangloi Jat, Mangolpuri, Hari Nagar and Janakpuri.

Jat-dominated constituencies of Najafgarh, Dwarka, Bijwasan, Palam and Rajendra Nagar are the constituencies in south-west Delhi which have no women contestants.

Interestingly, New Delhi constituency from where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is contesting has the highest number of ten candidates in any Assembly segment.
