With the fight between former Orissa CM Giridhar Gamang and his wife Hema over the Koraput (ST) Lok Sabha seat threatening to get uglier by the day, the Congress high command today swung into action.
Party president Sonia Gandhi today met Gamang, who had gone into a sulk over reports that his wife may be preferred over him for the Koraput seat.
Sources said that in an effort to placate the senior leader, he was offered the choice of any other Lok Sabha seat in Orissa. It is learnt that he had also been told earlier that he could contest the Assembly elections from whereever he chose but must leave the Koraput Lok Sabha seat for his wife Hema.
Emerging from the meeting, Gamang, however, repeated his demand for a ticket for both the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls from Koraput ‘‘in the interest of the Congress’’.
Hema, sitting MP from Koraput, has been chosen for re-nomination from the same constituency. Gamang had vacated the seat when he took over as chief minister in 1999.
