Sonia Gandhi was re-elected as the Congress president today with no one else coming forward to challenge her. A formal announcement will be made tomorrow after the scrutiny of nomination papers.
Central Election Authority chairman Oscar Fernandes confirmed that she was the only candidate after the nominations closed today, adding that 100 sets of nomination papers had been filed for her.
Party sources hinted that Sonia, instead of nominating CWC members, may call for an election to the party’s highest decision-making body. The last time when 10 seats in the elective quota were put to vote was at the Kolkata plenary session in 1997. The session was held for ratifying Sitaram Kesari’s presidentship and it resulted in the defeat of Rajesh Pilot by a narrow margin.
While the idea of a contest is yet to crystalise, speculation has begun over the motive of any such move. The process may be used to ease out old-timers in favour of younger leaders without much controversy.
