The West Bengal Government has ruled out a CBI inquiry into the death of Rizwanur Rehman and removal of three senior police officials who allegedly threatened to separate him from his wife. On Thursday, all five police officials, named in the case, told the Calcutta High Court that the allegations that they threatened Rehman, the computer graphics teacher, were baseless.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee ruled out the CBI probe into Rizwanur’s death and the removal of the three IPS officers, including Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, who allegedly pressurised him to part with his wife, Minority Affairs Minister Abdus Sattar said.

Meanwhile, the CID grilled Trinamool Congress MLA Javed Ahmed Khan. Khan was the only politician to visit Rizwanur’s house in Tiljala and allegedly put pressure on his family on behalf of Ashok Todi. Rizwanur had written about the visit in a letter written before his death.

But, Mamata Bannerjee quickly stepped in to defend her party colleague. “Khan did nothing wrong by going to Rizwanur’s house. He is an elected representative of that area. If someone asked me, I would have also done the same thing,” said Mamata. “But law will take its own course” she added.

Khan said he was ready to co-operate with the CID. “Since the matter is subjudice I will not like to comment. I answered all the questions the officers asked me,” said Khan.
