NEW DELHI, AUG 22: When Nisha Millet she came out of the Talkatora Pool after completing her 400m freestyle event in the Nutrine Asia-Pacific Swimming and Diving Championship today, she was elated. “I did not expect it,” she said.

It was just a bronze medal. But during the course of her effort, she had set a new national mark in the event, which was not hers until recently. Her timing of 4:29.72 clipped off her own national record of 4:37.11 set at the Jodhpur Nationals last month. Before this achievement, Nisha had also won a silver in the 100m backstroke.

Chinese Taipei ruled the pool with 39 medals (13-11-15) and a meet record in the 400m free style. The Indians finished the opening day with seven silver and seven bronze medals (both in swimming and diving).

M Usha, Rakhi Mehra, Rajshree Chakrabarty, Shikha Tandon, Ishani Ghosh, Shruti Shrivastava and Suparna Paul were the medallists.

Rajshree Chakrabarty managed a silver (400m free) and three bronze medals. Usha also got two medals, including asilver.

Nisha, who was fifth in the first 150m, covered a long distance to go one place up at the turn and picked up momentum going into the last lap. Inching her way up, she posed a threat to Thai Tachakittranan Pilan but the latter claimed second spot behind team-mate Cherdchuriyasub Tanatpo.

Thailand finished the day with seven gold, two silver and two bronze medals while China were third in the list with five gold, four silver and a bronze.
