A demand for making night duty for women optional by incorporating amendments to the Factories Act, 1948 was made in Rajya Sabha on Monday. Raising the issue through a special mention, Congress member Kamla Manhar said the Centre should take adequate safety measures for protection of women in their workplace.

Two-kid norm

The EC has not made any proposal for “disqualifying” persons with more than two children from contesting elections to the Parliament and Assemblies, MoS for Law and Justice K. Venkatapathy informed Rajya Sabha on Monday. The minister said the PM has launched a national legal literacy mission to empowering economically and socially weaker sections by making them legally literate.

Child Rights Bill

The Centre, on Monday, introduced a Bill in Lok Sabha for better protection of child rights. The Commission for Protection of Child Rights Bill, 2005, tabled by MoS for HRD Kanti Singh, seeks to set up a national panel for the purpose.

Ministry pulled up

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Monday took the Civil Aviation Ministry to task for not inviting CPI(M) MP Varkala Radhakrishnan for the launch of Air India Express Service to Gulf countries. This was after the Kerala MP complained to the Speaker in the House that the Ministry has violated norms on two counts. By organising the Kochi-Abu Dhabi inaugural flight of the Air India Express during the Budget session period and it did not bother to invite him to take part in the programme.

Forest management

Ministry of Environment is contemplating a forest management panel in forest villages to boost afforestation, said Environment and Forests Minister A Raja in Rajya Sabha. He said the Centre was consulting states and NGOs on the policy. ENS & PTI
