NHRC demands more “sensitive” legislation for prisoners

NEW DELHI, SEPT 14: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today demanded amendment in the existing Prisons Act, which is more than 100 years old and “not very relevant to the present criminal justice system”.

The Commission, which sent its draft on legislation onprisons to the Home Ministry a few years ago, has also framed guidelines for the prisons reforms, which it considers as an important area for the promotion of human rights.

“There is a need to have legislation which is more sensitive and can provide means for the betterment and rehabilitation of the prisoners,” NHRC chairman J S Verma said while addressing a seminar on “prison reforms” here.
