Next UPA-Left meet likely to be postponed

The next meeting of the UPA-Left committee on the Indo-US nuclear deal is likely to be postponed if the warring alliance partners fail to arrive at a solution to take the stalled pact forward.

While the government strongly favours taking the draft safeguards agreement to the Board of Governors of the IAEA, they are unlikely to move forward if the Left parties are not on board.

There is also a strong view in sections of the government that the spiralling inflation, which has touched 11.05 per cent, is a bigger issue and needs to be handled with a greater urgency than the nuclear deal.

“The meeting can be postponed if there is no substantive forward movement,” Congress sources said.

The meeting of the UPA-Left committee was earlier scheduled for June 18, which was postponed by a week as the Communist parties stuck to their stand of not allowing any forward movement on the nuclear deal.

If the situation continues to be the same as it was on June 18, with no forward movement in the ongoing parleys, there is no point in having a meeting of the UPA-Left panel.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday morning and briefed him about the current situation on the talks with UPA and Left leaders.
