In order to meet the demand of the growing population in Gurgaon, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is constructing a second water treatment plant in the city, at a cost of Rs 86.44 crore.The tender pre-qualification bid has been received by HUDA, and work will be allotted soon. Administrator HUDA Gurgaon, G Anupama, said that this second water treatment plant at Chandu-Budhera would be constructed in two phases. It will have the storage capacity of 66 millions gallons daily (MGD). The Administrator added that construction work on the third water treatment plant of 20 MGD is under progress at Basai. It is likely to be functional by March 2009. She added that two water treatment plants of 20 MGD each are functional at Basai. About 30-35 MGD of water is supplied to the city daily.With these arrangements, 126 MGD water would be supplied, which would be sufficient for meeting the requirement of the population of the city, which stands at 22 lakh, she said.Gurgaon city is presently getting water through Gurgaon Water Supply Channel which originates from village Kakroi in district Sonepat and culminates at village Basai in Gurgaon. This channel had been upgraded and it would carry 175 cusecs instead of earlier 100 cusec of water. The government had incurred Rs 19.63 crore on this. To meet the drinking water demand of growing population in Gurgaon, the government has taken up construction work of second channel named NCR Channel at a cost of Rs. 225 crore which would have capacity of 800 cusec water, and a major percentage of it would be for Gurgaon.
