Justice S.N. Phukan, who has been appointed to probe the Tehelka expose, today said he would recommend ‘‘action’’ against the guilty even if they are holding high political positions.
‘‘It does not matter if anybody is holding high political post in the country. If I find, during my investigations, that top political and powerful people are involved then I will recommend necessary action,’’ the retired SC judge told a TV channel here.
Asserting that he has always worked ‘‘impartially’’, Justice Phukan said the new assignment was an ‘‘honour’’ for him and he would do justice to the ‘‘sensitive job’’.
Asked whether he plans to resign from his current post as chairman of the Assam Human Rights Commission, the Justice said he can handle both assignments simultaneously.
On Tehelka managing editor Tarun Tejpal’s statement that the news portal will not participate in further investigation by the new panel, Justice Phukan said it would be difficult for him to say anything before examining the case. ‘‘I would not like to comment anything now as I have not yet taken charge and only after I do so the matter would be examined thoroughly,” he said.
