Constable Gurjit Singh of the Punjab Police’s 4th Commando battalion, who has been booked for attempt to murder, had been deputed to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s security from where he was further allocated to the CM’s nephew and Rajasthan MLA Jagat Singh.
Singh’s battalion is headquartered at Mohali from which the CM’s security is drawn. Singh, who was beaten up for allegedly opening fire at a New Year Eve’s party, is part of the two-man Punjab Police team delegated for Jagat.
Police today suspended Singh. An Information and Public Relations Department release said: ‘‘Taking a serious view of the incident (which) occurred at Manali on December 31, the Police Department has placed constable Gurjit Singh under suspension… Departmental inquiry has been initiated against him and a case … has been registered against him.’’
While a section of the police sought to defend the security granted to Jagat, some questioned PP gunmen were being deputed for a Rajasthan MLA’s security. ADGP Security R.K. Gupta refused comment but other officers said Jagat used to travel in Punjab, was a relative of the CM and could have a threat perception. Former CM Badal’s relatives too had security.
