CHANDIGARH, Aug 11: A series of talks on plantation and environment conservation were organised at Chandimandir Cantonment as a part of the on going Environment and Nature Conservation Week, being observed under the aegis of the Western Command.

Emphasising the need to promote plantation, local president of the Environment Society of India, S.K. Sharma said that the society was undertaking the work in a planned way by planting a variety of species.

He added that the society’s national environment awareness campaign launched four years ago had covered 45 formations under the Western Command.

Joint Director Ministry of Forests and Environment K.K. Garg cautioned the audience against the alarming situation of air and water pollution. He called for containing air pollution by growing more trees and also controlling vehicular emission.

Representative of the Haryana Forest Department stressed upon the need to control population and promote massive afforestation.As a part of the greening drive being undertaken by the Western Command and its formations, about 1,600 saplings were planted by students of Army schools in the cantonment.

Meanwhile, about 300 cadets from No.2 Chandigarh NCC Battalion also planted saplings in the premises of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 today.
