Responding to reports that call centres have turned into sweat shops for young girls and boys all over the country, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has decided to summon heads of all such organisations for a discussion on the working conditions at these places.

Girija Vyas, chairperson, NCW, said that in light of the incident in Bangalore in which a young woman BPO employee was raped and murdered after being fraudulently picked up by a company car, “We have been alerted into taking a proactive stand to prevent any untoward incident.’’ She said the meeting fixed for the weekend would take stock of the situation in the NCR region.

Vyas said, ‘‘reports about the horrible working conditions at the call centres have always been a matter of concern,’’ but added that the murder had jolted the NCW into action. The NCW, she claimed, had already asked for a detailed report from the Karanataka government about the incident. The State Women’s Commission was also probing the case.

Vyas said besides poor working conditions at the call centres, the highly unsafe arrangement of the girls being dropped home at unearthly hours by hired vehicles was too big a problem to be ignored. The discussions, she said, would cover call centres all over the country with special focus on women employees.

Also, the proposed bill on regulating the working conditions of women— which is in the final stage of drafting—will be tabled in Parliament soon and is expected to streamline call centres’ functioning, Vyas said.
