Srinagar, July 10: A crucial meeting of the National Conference working committee today failed to take a decision on whether to remain in the NDA and was extended by another day to facilitate more participation.
“The working committee will meet again tomorrow afternoon to discuss the agenda — whether to remain with the nda or not,” party general secretary Sheikh Nazir, who came out of the inconclusive meeting told waiting reporters at his residence, where the meeting is on.
Speaker after speaker spoke in favour of autonomy but no indication was available as to what decision the NC would take on the issue of continuance in the NDA although Nazir said the party would not go for a confrontation with the Centre.
Before the start of the meeting, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah told reporters that the working committee meeting would be over in an hour and the media would know of the decision by this evening itself.
But Nazir said that the working committee would continue as “only four of the 31 members spoke so far.”
To a question whether the NC had softened its stand, he said: “We have a clear stand on autonomy. We have passed the resolution in the Assembly. We have promised people to restore autonomy and initiated the action by passing a resolution in the Assembly – a Supreme nobody.”
