Yet another incident in Digha Village has established the fact that villagers who oppose Naxalites may have to face dire consequences.

Naxalites killed two villagers, Badal Parmanik and Nimayee Murmu, from Digha Village in East Singhbhum district on Thursday night for not adhering to their orders.

On August 16, the Maoist cadres in a meeting had directed the villagers to mobilise one woman from every family. Parmanik and Murmu refused to follow the orders. Again, when the Naxalites put up posters exhorting villagers to boycott the Lok Sabha bypoll on August 29, the two villagers exercised their franchise.

Subsequently, the Naxalites killed Parmanik and Murmu. “They were gunned down by the Maoists last night,” said police. Later, DGP V D Ram and CM Madhu Koda visited Digha and consoled the family members of the deceased. “Had the police taken note of their concerns, they would not have died,” said Sugni, sister of Badal Parmanik.

Police have now been deployed at Digha. “This incident has established that life of the villagers who are not ready to join the Naxals is unsafe,” said Sudhir Kumar, a social activist.

Meanwhile, 150 Maoists launched an attack on the Richuguta Railway Station on Thursday afternoon. “They resorted to indiscriminate firing,” said Jay Narain Bharti, a jawan of the RPF, who was injured during the attack.
