NEW DELHI, July 20: The Navy plans to commission a missile destroyer designated INS Delhi this September according to Vice Admiral Sushil Kumar, Vice Chief of Naval Staff.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the missile destroyer was constructed at the Mazagaon Dockyard Ltd (MDL), Mumbai.

The Admiral stated that a missile corvette designated INS Kora would also be commissioned into service within this year. The boat was under construction at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Calcutta. Both the ship building yards are under the administrative control of the Defence Ministry.

The import of the announcement over new warship construction stems from the fact that the former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral V S Shekhawat highlighted the lack of warship orders to augment naval capability. Given the long lead times for building a ship any delays in placing orders can adversely affect the number of ships necessary for maritime security.

The Navy has indigeniously built 73 warships till date and can claim to have achieved the highest levels of indigenisation in military hardware when compared to the Army or Air Force. He said that two more ships to be commissioned into service later are the Tarangini, a sail training ship and the Aditya a tanker.
