The Indian Navy has ordered an inquiry into the incident which resulted in the killing of three Pakistani fishermen after they were fired upon by two Naval fast attack vessels off the coast of Gujarat.
The incident occurred when the two vessels, imported from Israel, were on a routine patrol from Jakhau to Kori creek on Monday afternoon. When the vessels spotted the boat and hailed it, it refused to stop forcing them to fire warning shots.
It is learnt that Naval headquarters has called back the two vessels to Mumbai and established a court of inquiry into the incident. According to Naval Headquarters’ sources, the role of the captains of the vessels is also under scrutiny. If the court of inquiry establishes that there was a lapse in the role of the two captains, then appropriate action will be taken against them, said sources. Meanwhile, the Navy is also taking measures to ensure that there is no retaliatory action by the Pakistan Navy on Indian fishermen.
According to South Block sources, Naval headquarters has sent out ‘‘appropriate instructions to show restraint’’ to all its vessels on the Western Seaboard to be more cautious in the event of similar occurrences.
