DECEMBER 5: The Western Naval Command and Tata-IBM have jointly developed a new software for handling various information about the officers and other employees. The move has been described by the naval officials as an attempt to achieve `paperless solutions’ for various inhouse problems.
Launching the new product, Vice-Admiral A R Tandon, said this is just a pilot project. “I am happy that the western command has taken initiative in this regard and hope that this would soon be implemented by the entire navy to save time and eliminate cumbersome office methods,” he said.
“We are not buying any new computers, hardware or networking solutions from IBM. We already have sufficient number of systems to carry out the task. Tata-IBM has helped us only in implementing the new technology,” he said.
This software will enable the naval authorities to process leave applications, handling personnel data, ect. There is also client-server application developed for operational processes, said officials. Mike Colleary the director of IBM’s Asia Pacific operations said India is a key market and an important place for the company’s software interests. “This office automation solution is a basic platform on which the Indian Navy can construct its complete network infrastructure,” he added.
The naval officials declined to give the total amount that has been spent, and is likely to be spent in future, in this project as it is still in the pilot level. But they said that the cost is insignificant if one takes the time lost in routine administrative chores and paper work.
