The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) of NASA has selected Pune scientist Dr Yogesh Wadadekar for working on its ambitious Hubble Space Telescope (HST) project. Dr Wadadekar is one of the few Indians working at STScI which is the astronomical research centre for HST.

‘‘I will be working on reprocessing of data obtained for the archival parallels programme with the WFPC II camera on the HST,’’ Wadadekar, who has a PhD from Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), said.

The HST, while recording the main observations with it’s Prime Focus, simultaneously records random observations with the help of WFPC camera. This data will be analysed, detailed research of which is expected to throw light on many fields like galactic structure, cosmic shear and galaxy evolution.

Other than the main observations by Prime Focus, the HST has recorded 3,000 observations which will be analysed by a data analyst, to be supervised by Wadadekar. The STScI caters to science and mission support, instrument development, data archiving and grants management.
