NEW DELHI, JAN 30: The family of Sanjeev Nanda today offered an unconditional `assistance package’ to the families of the victims of the BMW crash of January 10. Seven people were mowed down by the car which was being driven by Sanjeev Nanda. Nanda has been remanded to judicial custody till February 12, by Metropolitan Magistrate V.K. Sharma.
Earlier, the Nandas had offered to compensate the victims if the prosecution was willing to try the case as an accident rather than culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Today, the family said it has decided to pay compensation irrespective of the status of the case in the courts.
The appropriate amount is to be decided by a committee of eminent persons, they added. The statement issued by the family said that the Nandas had wanted to assist the victims’ families even before the case was brought up for bail arguments. The statement issued by Sanjeev Nanda’s father, Suresh Nanda, read:“I wanted to assist the families of the victims in their hour of need. However, my lawyers had advised me that in such cases, help from the father of one of the accused may be considered unfavourable.”
