The newly-constituted National Security Commission met on Tuesday for its first major task — of shortlisting officers for the post of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chief.
The Commission, constituted on January 2 as part of the Supreme Court’s directions on police reforms, is headed by the Union Home Minister.
CRPF has been without a Director General since November last year, with DG National Security Guards (NSG) J K Dutt officiating as the head of the force.
Shortlisted names will be sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a final decision.
Establishment of the Commission is part of the Supreme Court’s recommendations on appointment of heads of Central Paramilitary Forces with a fixed tenure. Those who attended Tuesday’s meeting as members of the Commission included National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, Cabinet Secretary B K Chaturvedi, Union Home Secretary V K Duggal and Director Intelligence Bureau P C Haldar.
