Petroleum Minister Ram Naik assumed the role of a pracharak during a recent trip to Port Blair to inaugurate Indian Oil’s LPG bottling plant. And a group of 15 media persons were lectured on Veer Savarkar’s greatness.
Naik used the opportunity to enlighten the group with Savarkar anecdotes. He also decided to announce that the Indian Oil Foundation would pay for a memorial as a tribute to freedom fighters — especially ‘‘Veer Savarkar.’’
After paying homage at a memorial in Cellular Jail, Naik went to the cell in which Savarkar was held. Even the guide went on about Savarkar.
Just as everyone thought the visit to Savarkar’s cell was the end of the jail tour, Naik asked everyone to hear recordings and songs associated with the freedom fighter. He expressed his annoyance at the fact that there was so much controversy about installing Savarkar’s portrait in Parliament. Later at a function in the evening, Naik didn’t fail to refer to Savarkar.
