The biggest of Mumbai’s problems is the hordes of people entering the city each day. They should be stopped from coming here. This is possible only if the villages and other semi-urban areas are made economically strong.

People who come to Mumbai, I guess, still love their respective villages and are here only to earn a living. There is therefore a feeling among them that the city is not their own. They don’t love it enough to keep it clean. This is not to say that people who make a home on the footpaths and in slums are the only ones who dirty the city. It is just that most of Mumbai’s problems would be much more manageable if a few lakh people were subtracted from its population.

Each housing complex or chawl should be made accountable for the footpath adjacent to it. I don’t see any reason why it should not remain clean thereafter. If there can be any other solution, it is education.

Co-operative societies should be compelled to plant trees and look after them. I have planted trees. In fact, Ihave placed some indoor plants even in the corners of the staircase where people tend to spit. Nobody spits on the plants now.

Mumbai faces another problem that troubles the artiste in me — young children in this city don’t have proper exposure to art, especially to the performing arts. Of course, dramatics and music have been made compulsory in schools these days. But is this really helping children to get anywhere in the field? Teachers who are ill or are about to retire are given charge of the art syllabus so that `they don’t have to run about too much’. The teachers’ aptitude is not taken into consideration at all. The Bachelor in Education course, therefore, needs to be revamped.
