‘‘I don’t believe in his ideology, My only fault is that I became his son-in-law in 1997. That was also my father’s decision,’’ said Iftikhar Geelani, son-in-law of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was arrested here today.

Speaking to The Indian Express over the telephone while the intelligence officials were raiding his house, Iftikhar said: ‘‘They are trying to implicate me.’’ He claimed that the only ‘‘incriminating documents’’ that had been found were ‘‘four copies of Pakistani visa forms’’ and an ‘‘old US state department’s report that has details of Indian forces in Kashmir.’’ He added that the officials had seized his computer also.

A graduate from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Iftikhar works for a German radio, Najam Sethi’s Friday Times as well as the Jammu-based Kashmir Times. ‘‘I am a proud journalist and all my friends know how I have been struggling in Delhi since 1989,’’ said Iftikhar, who had recently bought a flat in Khirki Extension, Malviya Nagar with the help of a bank loan.

He reportedly maintained a distance from his father-in-law. ‘‘My father is a known Jamat -e-Islami basher,’’ pointed out Iftikhar, who also hails from Sopore.
