I have been very lucky that the things I enjoyed doing came my way as work. I was interested in karate and dancing and so enjoyed all the dishum dishum and masti that is part of Hindi movies.

I used to also sing as a hobby. Friends would tell me that I sing well. But I never took them seriously. Once, when Naved Jafferi and I went to the studio to record the jingle of Boogey Woogey, the show I produce, the singer did not turn up. We were on a tight budget and didn’t know what to do next. Naved suggested that I give it a shot, and once he heard my voice, music director Raju Singh also seemed enthusiastic. After the recording, he casually asked me what I was doing the next day and we fixed up to meet at the studio again. Of course, I didn’t know what was on his mind when I reached there the next morning. He asked me to sing some of my favourite songs and got them recorded.

A demo tape of it was sent to Ken Ghosh, who listened to it and then decided to produce it. Before long, we were recording my songs, with Kiran Kotrial writing the lyrics and Singh providing the music. The album, Ravi, was released in December. I didn’t really plan any of this, it just happened.
