RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan today created a flutter when he told the media at Kalavai, near Vellore, that a third Acharya has been appointed to perform the rituals at the Kanchi mutt.
Soon after, the mutt’s new manager Pollachi Mahadevan denied any such move. ‘‘We are guided by acharyas Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi in all our activities. That’s all I can say,’’ he told the Express at Kanchipuram.
Sudarshan’s comment was significant as it followed soon after his visit to senior pontiff Jayendra Saraswathi, camping at Kalavai since his release on bail in the Shankararaman murder case. But the RSS chief did not elaborate on the issue of a third Acharya. His revelation came towards the end of a media interaction, after which he boarded his car and sped away. Sudharshan had earlier told reporters that he had made a request to Jayendra Saraswathi that he should make public the sufferings and torture he had undergone at the hands of the police.
Meanwhile, Kanchi mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer, arrested on December 24 in connection with the Sankararaman murder case, was today remanded to one-day police custody.
