Destiny played a trick on Gurpreet and Amanjit who got engaged two years ago. On July 2, Gurpreet, who was in California, was murdered. Amanjit, who was set to marry him in November, could not bear the shock and committed suicide.In fact, two hours before she killed herself, she told Gurpreet’s father Baldev Singh: ‘‘I am going to meet him, if you have any message tell me.’’ Singh says: ‘‘I did not know she was so serious about meeting him that she would end her life.’’The 24-year-old used her father’s 12 bore licensed rifle to shoot herself in the mouth after leaving three suicide notes that are at the Police Chowki in Sultanwind.‘‘They never met and she had been engaged to his picture. When she heard about how brutally he was killed, she couldn’t believe it. She was convinced about her loss only after she visited Gurpreet’s home and saw the mourning there. Then she forced us to visit his home again and killed herself once she was alone,’’ says Amanjit’s father Jagtar Singh.‘‘Gurpreet used to call her up everyday, sometimes twice or three times. He was planning to return to India for good,’’ says Amanjit’s mother.While Amanjit was a graduate from Khalsa College, Gurpreet was not even a matriculate. But they had developed a bond after the arranged match. He was a clean-shaven sehajdhari when he left India but became a devout Sikh in the US. Amanjit followed suit by getting baptised here.Gurpreet’s mother, visibly shaken after losing her son, says: ‘‘He had just passed class seven but he was a Karate champion of Punjab and a competition took him to USA five years ago. He decided to stay there. But he was going to return with his savings of Rs 1 crore.’’Gurpreet used to drive a taxi during the night and slept during the day. ‘‘No one knows how he was killed. A black girl reported the crime to police at around 1 am,’’ says his aunt who lives in California and brought his body here.
