Mundy hits an albatross

The championship hole at the DGC is seen as easy meat for at least a birdie. Today it saw birds of all feathers. Before Mark Brown’s eagle came a jaw-dropping rarity. Uttam Singh Mundy had driven a long one on the longest hole of the course — a par-five — and was targetting the green with the second shot, but the ball hit the ground and kept on rolling. Before anyone could blink, it was in the hole for an albatross.

Mundy’s first, and only the 15th on the Asian Tour since 1995, the two-shot wonder made the Chandigarh player’s day. “It hit the flagstick and stopped for a couple of seconds. But when it dropped in I just couldn’t believe it. I was so excited with it, I didn’t care about anything else,” he said. The fillip to his card gave him a two-under round that puts him in tied 12th place.
