Jan 6: In what might turn out to be the violation of the election code of conduct on the eve of the Lok Sabha polls, Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde, yesterday promised farmers a comprehensive crop insurance scheme after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power .

Addressing a farmers’ rally at Niphad, where former chairman of the Nashik District Land Development Bank, R D Kshirsagar (a former Congressman) and his followers joined the BJP, Munde said that once the BJP came to power, a comprehensive crop insurance scheme to cover all crops, including cash crops , would be introduced. He said that farmers had been neglected by the Congress since Independence and the BJP would redress all their grievances.

MCCI RESOLVES TO LAUNCH NON-COOPERATION DRIVE:The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has resolved to launch a Non-Cooperation movement against the Central Government by asking its members to refrain from paying the five per cent service charge on goods transport.

A resolution to the effect was passed at a state-level MCCI meeting held here yesterday. MCCI president Dilip Dandekar urged the members to unite to fight for the abolition of the service charge, pointing out that he had taken up the issue with the Finance Minister and would pursue the matter with the President soon.

ERRING DOCTOR FINED FOR NEGLIGENCE:The Nashik district Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum has found Dr R N Pandya guilty of negligence and has ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 18,820 to a patient.

The patient, Rohini Dhondge, had approached Dr Pandya on May 26, 1993 for an abortion. After the abortion, she developed complications and it was discovered that the operation was not done properly. She was operated upon again.

Her husband, Sunil had filed a complaint with the Nashik district Consumer Forum on November 17, 1993 (Case No 462/93). The forum found the doctor guilty of negligence and on December 29, 1997, ordered him to pay a compensation . Dr Pandya, incidentally, had been arrested on December 20, 1997, following the death of a lady patient at his nursing home.
