In a veiled attack on MNS’ campaign against North Indians in Mumbai, Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Tuesday said Mumbai represented the cosmopolitan spirit of India and any other depiction of the city would be to lessen its character and deny its history and ethos.

Without naming any outfit, he said some political parties and groups operating within the ambit of the Constitution “tend to obstruct” exercise of fundamental rights by citizens and what was “equally disconcerting is the propensity in various quarters to explain such behaviour or explain it away”.

Mumbai represents the cosmopolitan spirit of India.

It embodies the entrepreneurial energy and the will to succeed among common citizens. Any other depiction of Mumbai would be to lessen it and deny its history and its ethos,” Ansari said while speaking at the Jamnalal Bajaj Awards function in Mumbai.

The Vice-President expressed concern that “the basic constitutional framework of rights and obligations is under stress”.

“Indian citizenship has emerged as our primary identity in the modern world. It co-exists alongside our other multiple identities including those defined by class, religion, language, community and the like. The other identities should not distract us to dilute our Indian identity,” he said adding “the moment distractions begin, they end up diluting the Indian identity”.
