IA union elections

The Central Executive Committee Members of the Indian Airlines Officers’ Association have elected the following office-bearers: H K Singh, deputy manager (ground support), Calcutta has been elected president; U C Chaturvedi deputy manager (plant engineering), Delhi is vice-president; P D Shenoy deputy manager, (commercial), Mumbai is general secretary; S Natarajan, deputy manager (commercial), Chennai is joint general secretary; and U S Vittal, deputy manager (personnel), Mumbai is treasurer.

Following the election, the association which represents the managerial staff of the airline, resolved to negotiate for a foreign posting policy for its members. It has also demanded a speedy settlement regarding its charter of demands which is now before the central government’s industrial tribunal.

Dharna

The Kalyan District Youth Congress held a dharna at the tehsildar’s office in Kalyan on Thursday. The dharna, conducted under the leadership of District Youth Congress chief and Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation corporator Santosh Kene, was held to demand the dismissal of the alliance government over the Ghatkopar firing which left ten dead.

The participants also raised slogans denouncing the alliance government over the attack on opposition leaders Chhagan Bhujbal and Madhukar Pichad’s residences. Others who participated in the dharna included R B Singh, Raja Akkewar, Mohan Purey, Rekha Gadave, Janardhan Patil, Uttam Rao and Pramod Desai.

Psychiatric cell

n A psychiatric cell has started functioning at the Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital from June 24 this year. According to a statement issued by the state government, expert psychiatrists attached to the Grant Medical College of JJ Hospital will visit the hospital every Tuesday and Friday at the OPD and examine patients. Cell No. 10 of the hospital is reserved for admitting serious cases, according to the superintend of the hospital.

Extended

n THE Western Railway has extended the Ahmedabad-Delhi tri-weekly Express till July 26. The last train will leave Ahmedabad on July 25 and leave Delhi on July 26. The train, 883 Dn, will depart from Ahmedabad at 17.15 hrs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays and arrive in Delhi at 12.10 hours on the following day. In the return trip, 884 Up will depart from Delhi at 14.15 hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrive at Ahmedabad at 09.30 hours on the following day.

Sports award

The Government of Maharashtra has invited applications for the Dadoji Konddev Award for outstanding sports coach. Sports coaches who have trained sportsmen of national and international standards can apply for this award. All sports organisations in the state should send their recommendations by August 30, 1997 to the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services.
